28 June 2011: JETS MANAGER, LISA MAKES IT TO ON TO FINAL SHORTLIST FOR 2011 PRIDE OF RACING AWARDS
Lisa Delany is one of the final 12 nominations for this year's Pride of Racing Awards, six of which will be selected to receive an award on 14 July at Epsom. Racing Welfare, organisers of this Betfair-backed event invited racing professionals and the public to put forward those who have made significant contributions to the sport.
17 December 2010: ADAM POGSON WINS RUK SUBSCRIPTION
Adam Pogson has won a free year's subcription to Racing UK, having been drawn as one of the jockeys to answer our DVD competition correctly. Sedgfield was the NH racecourse which featured at the end of the DVD. All jockeys should have received their copy over the last few weeks. Why not take a few minutes out of your Christmas break to watch it.
15 November 2010: GRIFFINS RICHARD DAVIS AWARDS GO TO ALAN DALY & LIAM COOPER
Former jockeys, Alan Daly , now a Firefighter with Surrey Fire and Rescue; and Liam Cooper ,now a fully qualified Farrier, have taken the Achievement and Progress categories (respectively) in the 2010 Griffins Richard Davis Awards. These awards are made by the Jockeys Employment and Training Scheme (JETS) to recognise the effort, initiative and forethought which jockeys and former jockeys put into developing new careers.
Alan and Liam received their awards on Sunday 14 November 2010 at Cheltenham Racecourse in an official presentation in the paddock before racing. Terry Boothby, a Partner at long term sponsors, Griffins Accountants, presented The Achievement Award (worth £2500 to the winner) and Ian Balding (Injured Jockeys Fund Trustee) presented The Progress Award (worth £2000).

29 October 2010: 2010 GRIFFINS RICHARD DAVIS AWARDS SHORTLIST & NEW EDITION DVD
The Jockeys Employment & Training Scheme has announced the shortlist for The 2010 Griffins Richard Davis Awards – the career development awards designed to reward jockeys for their initiative, effort and forethought in developing a career after race riding.
The winners will be presented with their awards, in keeping with recent tradition, before racing (at 12.40) on the Sunday of the Open Meeting at Cheltenham (14 November). The presentations will coincide with the launch of a new edition of the JETS DVD (entitled Staying Ahead of the Game) which explains how JETS can help jockeys to access career advice and training grants to learn new skills.

28 October 2010: COMPETITION FOR JOCKEYS - WIN AN RUK SUBSCRIPTION
All fully licensed jockeys will receive a complimentary copy of the New Edition-JETS DVD entitled ‘Staying Ahead of the Game’ in the post in the second half of November. If you would like to win one of two free RUK 12 month subscriptions, all you have to do is watch the video and answer one question about it (Think ‘Question of Sport’ observation test!).
Here's how it works: The competition quiz question will be sent by text to all fully licensed jockeys and will be posted HERE from Monday 15 November 2010. Replies can be sent by text or emailed to JETS. All correct answers will go forward for a prize draw to win one of two free subscriptions kindly donated by RUK. Entries will close: Monday 6 December 2010. Results will be announced in the Christmas/New Year edition of The JETS Journal & on the JETS website.
27 October 2010: NATIONAL STUD ANNOUNCES NEW LECTURE SERIES
The National Stud in Newmarket is hosting 3 evening lectures during November covering: the Latest equine disease threats (Thurs 4th), Equine First Aid (Thurs 11th) and The impact of training horses from an early age (Thurs 18th). National Stud November lecture details.
14 October 2010: HOW TO FALL
The British Racing School is running drop in sessions and half-day training courses aimed at licensed jockeys wishing to perfect their falling technique. Drop in sessions on the 11 November & 16 December are free. Half day course on the 16 November is £75. Further dates to follow. Contact clare@brs.org.uk for further details.

16 August 2010: HARD WORK PAYS OFF FOR MARK
Former NH jockey Mark Nicolls, who – as recently reported in the JETS Journal (August 2010) - has been busy working to become a commercial helicopter pilot, has so far achieved both key American and British qualifications which has involved taking 14 exams and 600 hours of classroom and home study. JETS SCHOLARSHIPS SET CANDIDATES
FREE TO STUDY
Former jockeys, Victoria
Behan and David Howard
are the latest JETS candidates to benefit from JETS
scholarships, which give them extra funding (beyond
the standard JETS grants) for the additional training
costs entailed in full-time study.
OLLIE TURNS FREELANCE WORK INTO
NEW CAREER
After 2 years of combining
his riding with freelance and then part-time salaried
work for BHEST (The British Horseracing Education and
Standards Trust), National Hunt jockey, Ollie
McPhail has now handed in his licence at the
age of 31, to take up a full-time role as Regional Education
Officerfor BHEST, working from his home in Gloucestershire.
STEVEN HARRISON, 2008 WINNER OF THE GRIFFINS RICHARD DAVIS ACHIEVEMENT AWARD - Cheltenham Racecourse, 16 November
Steven (Apprentice jockey 1997‐
2006), now 28 years old, retired from riding in 2006, having ridden as an Apprentice for
Lord Huntingdon, Mick Channon, Roger Charlton, Alan Bailey and latterly Nick Littmoden and
had seven winners.
On learning about the award, Steven commented: “I was speechless to find I’d won. I know
there are so many jockeys out there doing different things, I didn’t think I stood a chance.
The prize is going to be a huge help and will enable me to purchase some much needed new
equipment including a set of climbing spikes.”
JOCKEYS'
AGENT STRONGE WINS 2007 GRIFFINS RICHARD DAVIS ACHIEVEMENT
AWARD - Cheltenham Racecourse, 18 November 2007
25 year old former jump jockey, Sam
Stronge, is the winner of this year’s
top
Griffins ACHIEVEMENT Award. Sam
won the inaugural Injured Jockeys Fund
Progress Award in 2006 and this time the judges
were impressed by his achievements just 12 months
on, in what is a very competitive career as a Jockeys
Agent.
Lee
Tibbatts (28), a former conditional and amateur
jockey, rode primarily for West Country Trainer, Ron
Hodges before suffering a life-threatening fall
in a race at Salisbury in June 2003. He takes
home the £2,000 Injured Jockeys Fund PROGRESS
Award in recognition of his strength of purpose and
effort in defyng his injury to pursue a new career in
Farriery.
Adrian Moves to
New Arena
After a 15 year race riding career, former NH jockey
and JETS candidate, Adrian Scholes
has recently taken on a new role as one of the Heads
of stall handlers for Arena Leisure.

Stringer Moves
into Property
Former jump jockey, Patrick Stringer
contacted JETS following his broken leg and has now
been successful in securing a new job outside racing,
as a Lettings Negotiator for Andrews estate agents in
Swindon.

Frazer and Sam
Scoop Griffins Richard Davis Award
Former conditional jockey, and now an equine dentist,
Frazer Houston joined fellow 24 year old jockeys’
agent Sam Stronge in taking top honours in the annual
JETS Career Development awards. Both former jump jockeys
are the youngest recipients in the 10-year history of
the Awards. Applications for the 2008 GRD Award will
be accepted from June next year.
Ollie McPhail,
Ross Studholme, Vince Slattery and Emily Jones are introducing
youngsters to the sport
Through their part-time work with BHEST (The British
Horseracing Education and Standards Trust) these jockeys
are helping to inspire, explain and educate groups of
young people on school racecourse visits.
Liam Cooper
Awarded JETS Scholarship
Former National Hunt jockey, Liam Cooper, has started
his apprenticeship training as a Farrier, with the help
of one of the new JETS’ Scholarships. Lisa Delany
for JETS said: “Liam really deserves this scholarship.
He has done a lot of the groundwork himself, including
arranging his own apprenticeship.” For details

Paul Winter
and Nicola Wright Gain NVQ Assessor Roles
Both Paul and Nicola, former flat jockeys, have secured
part-time posts as Assessors. Paul for the College of
West Anglia and Nicola is starting work for the British
Racing School covering the South East of the country.
