Description:

Starter

M4 Corridor

150 Days

The British Horseracing Authority is the single governing and regulatory body for British Horseracing which ensures the continuing integrity and successful development of the sport.  It is the BHA's role to act for and on behalf of the whole sport, ensuring the highest standards for the sport and participants, on and away from the racecourse. Our vision is simple: to build a brighter future for our sport, our horses and our people.

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Starter to join our team on a part-time basis (150 days per year).  Regionally based, we require an organised and dedicated racing enthusiast to come and work with us as part of our Starting team.

We are looking for a Starter based along the M4 Corridor, to work on both Flat and National Hunt fixtures. The core function of this essential role is to ensure that races have a fair start in accordance with the Rules of Racing, coordinating horses, Jockeys and racecourse personnel at the start. As a Starter you will need to ensure that the rules and Standard Operating procedures currently in place are fairly and consistently adhered to.

You will be an individual who can demonstrate self-confidence and have the ability to gain the respect of external parties such as Jockeys and Trainers. The successful candidate will have excellent attention to detail, a proactive and flexible approach and plenty of initiative. Ideally, you will have knowledge of starting rules and procedures and previous experience working with horses.

This role demands personal integrity, strong communication skills with the need to be diplomatic, tactful and controlled in difficult situations. A good knowledge of racing and competent computer skills are desirable.

Candidates will be flexible with a mature approach and the ability to match diplomacy with authority. Given the nature of the role a full valid driving license is required (preferably clean) and the willingness to travel, including some overnight stays, being prepared to work outside the normal working day including evenings, weekends and bank holidays.

As the needs of the business change this role will change accordingly, therefore this document should be viewed as guidelines which are subject to change.

Culturally, we take pride in the way we work and what we achieve. We are committed to advancing the work of equality, diversity and inclusion and we want to attract the best people from the widest talent pool, as well as those who reflect the diverse nature of our society.
