Project Lead (Safety Projects)
Location – Flexible
2 Year Fixed Term Contract

Description:  Following the publication of the Horse Welfare Strategy, A Life Well Lived, in 2020, British horseracing’s independently chaired Horse Welfare Board (HWB) is seeking to recruit a Project Lead (Safety Projects) to oversee and coordinate the implementation of various operational and safety-related welfare projects identified within it.

The Project Lead will work with industry stakeholders to produce and deliver a phased, prioritised and costed plan for a suite of projects linked to:

• Design, construction, layout and visibility of racecourse and schooling obstacles
• Ground and going, looking both at racing and training surfaces
• A range of other racecourse and training operational safety aspects

The Project Lead will need to be highly collaborative, working across the industry to harness the expertise of racecourses, trainers, jockeys and the BHA, as well as other equine sports and racing jurisdictions, to develop and implement projects that minimise reasonably avoidable risks to racehorses when racing and training.

A strong and empathetic leader, the Project Lead will have previous experience of leading cross-functional projects and project teams, with an understanding of how to drive projects from the planning stage through to delivery.

A good operational understanding of racing, particularly practical aspects related to the management of racecourses or racehorse training, would be an advantage in this role. Comparable, relevant experience from another equine sport or discipline would also be considered. However, it is emphasised that the ability to oversee and deliver a programme of projects, making effective use of the expertise within the sport, is the primary requirement of the role.

This role is initially being offered as a two-year contract and, as such, will require the jobholder to work a minimum of four days per week. Location is flexible within the UK, though the jobholder must be able to travel to meetings around the country, as required.

The Project Lead (Safety Projects) is a cross-industry role, generously funded by The Racing Foundation, and will work alongside similar roles covering welfare data and communications. The role will formally be based, for salary and other administrative purposes, within the British Horseracing Authority (BHA). The role will report to the HWB Programme Director and will be accountable to the HWB’s Independent Chair.

Application:  If you feel you have the relevant skills and experience, please apply by submitting your CV accompanied by a suitability statement (no more than 1 side of A4) describing your relevant skills and experience against the job description to: recruitment@britishhorseracing.com

The closing date for applications is Tuesday 6 April 2021.

Please note that the recruitment process for this role will be managed by the BHA, on behalf of the Horse Welfare Board.
