New 'Jockey Matters' films successfully launch at Jockeys Seminar

An audience of 32 Conditional Jockeys watched the first in a series of new films entitled ‘Jockey Matters’ at the BHA 7lb Claiming Jockeys Seminar run by the British Racing School, held on Wednesday 20th July. The first film focuses on Nutrition with three sections examining how diet and exercise fits into the daily routine of jockeys such as Leighton Aspell, Jim Crowley and Ryan Moore and examines various weight loss techniques and how to optimize performance.

The films, which received an overwhelmingly positive response from the jockeys who attended the seminar, can be viewed online at www.jets-uk.org/jockeymatters where jockeys can also find contacts for the wide range of support that is available to them.

A new, more interactive format to the day was being trialled for the first time with really positive feedback from the attendees.

Other highlights from the new look seminar included a race riding tutorial with AP McCoy who gave an insightful and inspiring introduction about his experiences as a Jump jockey. Jockeys also had the chance to practice their interview skills and get tips from RUK Broadcaster Lydia Hislop as well as developing their Personal Development Plans in an interactive session with JETS PDP Manager Phil Kinsella.

David Prichard, Conditional Jockey with Victor Dartnell, said: “It was a great effort to provide new resources to jockeys and it was inspiring to have AP there.”

Hugo Thompson Brown, Conditional Jockey with Micky Hammond, said, “I thought we would just be sitting in a classroom but it was good to move about and interact with different people. It was a really informative day and I think they should do more for the younger lads.”
