New 'Jockeys Matters' film series to launch at Jockeys Seminar
The launch of a new series of films entitled ‘Jockey Matters’ will take place on Wednesday at the BHA Jockeys Seminar for 7lb Conditional Jockeys, run by the British Racing School. The films are aimed at Apprentices and Conditionals and focus on various aspects of jockey welfare with contributions from jockeys who have dealt with a range of issues in their career and highlight the support network available to young jockeys today.
The first film, to be shown at the seminar, focuses on Nutrition with three sections examining how diet and exercise fits into the daily routine of jockeys such as Leighton Aspell, Jim Crowley and Ryan Moore and examines various weight loss techniques and how to optimize performance.
The new film is just one of the highlights of the new look seminar which has been adapted to showcase the new curriculum developed as part of the Jockey Training & Development programme. The new format will feature interactive workshop sessions covering areas such as Resilience Training and incorporates Personal Development Plan sessions for the first time. There will also be a Technical/Tactical race riding tutorial with AP McCoy and Richard Perham.
Each jockey attending the seminar will be given a Jockey Training & Development handbook which contains details of the new curriculum and PDPs.
JETS Manager Lisa Delany said, “The aim of these films is for young jockeys to draw on the experiences of others and highlight the support available to ensure they maximise their potential and enjoy long and successful careers.”
Paul Struthers, Chief Executive of the Professional Jockeys Association said, “One of the fundamental aims of the Jockeys Training & Development strategy is to place fitness, nutrition, health and wellbeing at the very heart of jockeys’ development. We want each jockey to have their fitness assessed, be given bespoke nutritional advice, ensure they are given structured personalised plans to help them maintain their weights and to see and look after themselves, and be supported, as elite athletes. We hope the ‘Jockey Matters’ films act as a crucial aide to that process and look forward to launching the other videos on Mental Health & Wellbeing and Addiction & Recovery later this year, with hopefully others to follow.”
Gill Greeves, Vocational Training Manager at BHA, said, “The new and exciting format of the Jockey Seminars will provide our athletes with high quality and innovative training and educational support across key areas of their role. Interactive workshops will enable the jockeys to develop a range of skills which will enhance their performance across curriculum areas including race riding competencies, physical and mental fitness, media and communication proficiency and career and lifestyle experiences.”
